Australia FIFA World Cup Blog

Australia has finally qualified for the World Cup after 32 long and agonising years! We are off to Germany, and I cannot believe it. I am a fan of all Australian sport and write for the Victorian Amateur Football Association, and the President of one of Australia's largest cricket clubs, and had my best man at my wedding play for the Socceroos. And now I am off to Germany for the trip of a lifetime. This is my story.

Cahill in Serious Doubt

One of my favorite Socceroos, Tim Cahill, has had probably the worst news of his career given to him overnight in that he is in serious doubt to play at the World Cup.

This is shocking news, and with a slight tear in his posterior cruciate ligament, it is going to be a hard road for him to come back to fitness.

This means that we will not be seeing him play in Melbourne against Greece, while add Mark Schwarzer to the unavailables and a cloud over my favorite player, Harry Kewell, and we are looking a little shakey.

Hopefully this is the end of our bad luck though, and there is still an outside chance that both these boys will be available for the first up match against Japan. There is no doubt to me that Guus will name them in his 23 man squad though.

On a personal front, I am looking to get out in town this weekend and buy up on Australia gear. I already have my shirt, but want to pick up a scarf, beanie and a few other alternate shirts to take with me. Also, my wife Rebecca needs to be kitted out. Should be fun, and with only 43 days to go, there is not much time to wait!!

Less Than 50 Days to Go

I have not posted anything for a while, as it has been pretty hectic with Easter and cricket finals, but I just glanced across at my count down timer and can see that we have 49 days to go to the big day.

Things are really starting to get exciting.

My tickets turned up for the Greece game. That is going to be a huge evening. I cannot wait. I will have to go out and buy some scarves and beanies for the occasion and then I can take them with us to Germany a couple of weeks later.

It is also great to see a lot of the boys doing well in their domestic leagues. Dukes is on fire at Boro, while our other stars are all getting good game time. It was also nice to hear Ronaldo slagging us by saying he had never heard of Kewell or Viduka. Classic stuff, which will only be to our advantage come June. I sincerely think we can surprise the Brazlians and perhaps sneak a point out of that match, which will certainly put us on the front foot to qualify in our last game against Croatia.

In any event, it is 49 days to go, and as we get closer and closer, I guess I will be posting more entries into my World Cup diaries.

Watch this space.
